Question 1

How long do segmental retaining walls last?

Accepted Answer

A properly installed segmental retaining wall using quality concrete block or natural stone can last 40 to 50 years or more. Longevity depends on base preparation quality, proper drainage behind the wall, and the type of material used. Segmental walls have a major advantage over poured concrete — if one section shifts or a block fails, it can be repaired individually without demolishing the entire wall.

Question 2

Are segmental retaining walls better than poured concrete walls?

Accepted Answer

For most residential applications, yes. Segmental walls flex slightly with freeze-thaw movement rather than cracking like monolithic concrete. They allow drainage through and behind the wall, which reduces hydrostatic pressure — a leading cause of wall failure. They're also easier to repair, more design-flexible, and generally more visually appealing. Poured concrete walls are sometimes used for very high loads, but segmental systems are the preferred choice for residential landscaping.

Question 3

Do retaining walls require drainage systems?

Accepted Answer

Yes — proper drainage is critical to retaining wall performance and longevity. Without adequate drainage, water pressure builds up behind the wall (hydrostatic pressure), which is one of the most common causes of retaining wall failure. Every wall we install includes a gravel drainage zone behind it and, for taller walls, a perforated drainage pipe at the base to move water away from the structure safely.

Question 4

Can retaining walls increase property value?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Retaining walls that solve real landscaping problems — slope stabilization, erosion control, usable space creation — add measurable value to a property. Buyers recognize the functional benefit and the quality of the investment. In Newtown Square and surrounding communities where property upkeep is a priority, a well-built retaining wall signals a maintained, improved property.

Question 5

How tall can a segmental retaining wall be?

Accepted Answer

Most residential segmental retaining walls are 3 to 4 feet tall. Walls up to about 4 feet can typically be built with gravity-based segmental block without additional reinforcement. Walls taller than 4 feet generally require geogrid reinforcement layers buried in the soil behind the wall to safely handle the additional lateral load. For very tall walls (6 feet or more), a series of terraced walls is often a better solution than a single tall structure — it distributes pressure and looks better.
