Question 1

How long does paver patio installation take?

Accepted Answer

Greenstone Gardens usually finishes the installation of a typical residential paver patio (200–600 square feet) in two to four days, weather permitting. It could take five to seven days to complete larger or more complicated projects with retaining walls, drainage integration, or unique patterns. At the estimate stage, we give a precise project timeline.

Question 2

What is the difference between pavers and stamped concrete?

Accepted Answer

Concrete, brick, or natural stone are used to make pavers, which are separate interlocking units. Stamped concrete is poured as a single slab and stamped with a pattern while still wet. In freeze-thaw climates like Pennsylvania, pavers are much more resilient because individual pavers can be replaced without affecting the surrounding surface if a section settles or a unit breaks. Over time, stamped concrete develops cracks that are extremely difficult to conceal. Additionally, pavers provide more design flexibility by allowing you to mix and match colors and patterns.

Question 3

Do paver patios need maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Although they require little upkeep, paver patios do benefit from occasional care. We advise re-sanding joints with polymeric sand every five to seven years, using a penetrating sealer every two to three years to preserve color and prevent stains, and occasionally pressure washing to get rid of organic debris and algae. In shaded areas, an annual application of a paver-safe weed inhibitor keeps joints clean.

Question 4

What causes paver patios to sink or shift, and how is it prevented?

Accepted Answer

An insufficiently compacted base is the most frequent reason for paver failure. Before the sand bed is screeded, a properly installed paver patio needs 6 to 8 inches of compacted crushed stone (modified gravel). Lower-cost contractors frequently take a shortcut by skimping on base depth, which causes settling and heaving within a few winters. Greenstone Gardens ensures that your patio remains level for decades by adhering to ICPI base specifications on every project.

Question 5

Can pavers be installed over an existing concrete slab?

Accepted Answer

In certain situations, it is possible to install pavers over an existing slab if the slab is structurally sound, has sufficient drainage, and the additional height won't cause issues at doorways or the adjacent grade. However, this method can result in long-term settling issues and eliminates your ability to address underlying drainage problems. Greenstone Gardens assesses your specific site during the free consultation and will recommend the best approach for a lasting result.
